After dark in Minsk

Minsk

A small scene, and far better than its reputation. The rooms worth an evening are known rather than advertised — precisely what a desk is for.

The streets

Two streets carry most of an evening in Minsk. Zybitskaya, cobbled and bar-lined along the river, is the obvious start. Oktyabrskaya, a run of ex-industrial courtyards a short walk away, is the less obvious one — exactly the kind of room this desk exists to know about.

The scene

Belarusians go to a bar before they go to a club, and the real story after dark here is a serious, mostly homegrown electronic scene that was building long before anyone outside the country was paying attention to it: a Mechta night (the country’s largest techno project, running since 2016), one of Siyanie’s smaller, chamber-format sets on Internacyjanalnaja Street, or summer’s multi-stage 375 Festival. It is a small scene, and a considerably better one than Minsk’s reputation suggests.

Minsk’s evening is a weekend one — Friday through Sunday morning is when the city is actually out.

If a room is beyond us we say so the same day, rather than working on it quietly for a week.
