After dark in Almaty

Almaty

The evening runs uphill: a table at altitude while the light goes, then a private room in the centre. Kazakhstan’s business capital keeps both, and the good rooms take one call rather than three.

The streets

Dostyk Avenue is the concentrated version of an Almaty evening — bars and lounges within a short walk of each other, and the easiest of these six cities to move around after dark on foot. The Esentai end of Al-Farabi Avenue is the dressier version of the same street.

The scene

What Almaty has that none of the others do is the mountains. A cluster of rooftop bars built into the lower slopes look straight out at the Tien Shan, and a table there while the light goes is the one fixture of an Almaty evening worth planning the rest of the night around.

The rooftops are a summer fixture. They close with the cold — roughly October to April — and the evening moves indoors for the rest of the year.

If a room is beyond us we say so the same day, rather than working on it quietly for a week.
