Singapore is the trip where the logistics disappear entirely, which makes it the right first stop for anyone nervous about Asia and the right stopover for everyone else.

Three days is the honest length: one for the bay and the gardens, one for the neighbourhoods — Kampong Glam, Tiong Bahru, Katong — and one that is entirely about eating.

Where you will go

Where you will go

The places this country is actually about, and what each one is for.

Marina Bay from the air, the ArtScience Museum and the bay front below.

Marina Bay

The skyline everyone books for. Worth one evening, from the water.

The Supertree Grove at Gardens by the Bay, steel canopies above the walkway.

Gardens by the Bay

The Cloud Forest at opening, before the tour groups and the humidity.

Restored shophouses along Pagoda Street in Singapore’s Chinatown.

Chinatown & Tiong Bahru

Hawker centres with Michelin stars, and a modernist estate worth an hour.

The Rain Vortex falling through the centre of Jewel Changi Airport.

Changi

The airport is part of the trip. Time the connection properly and Jewel is an hour well spent.

Know before you go

  • It rains hard and briefly, most days. This is not a reason to reschedule anything.
  • Alcohol is expensive enough to change your evening plans; we will tell you where it is not.
  • Everything is fast, so the temptation is to over-schedule. Three sights a day is plenty.
